Contrast against the surrounding font

A style looks cool in a feed for one reason: it is visibly different from the platform's own typeface. Instagram, TikTok and Discord all set text in a plain sans-serif, so the styles that stand out most are the ones furthest from that, monospace for a terminal feel, fullwidth for spacing, blackletter for weight, and the filled squares and circles for a badge-like block. Sans-serif bold reads as cool in a bio precisely because everything around it is regular weight. The mistake is stacking several of these in one bio; one styled line against plain lines does the work.

Keeping it legible at phone sizes

Cool and legible pull in opposite directions. The filled-square alphabet is striking but each glyph is a small dark block, and at the 13-point size of a bio it can blur into a bar. Fullwidth letters stay readable because the spacing does the work, not the shape. Sans-serif bold and monospace lose nothing at any size. If a handle needs to be read aloud or typed by someone else (a Discord nickname people search for, a stream title) prefer a style where the letterforms are still the ordinary Latin shapes, and save the heavy blocks for a headline nobody has to retype.

Frequently asked questions

Which cool font is safest for a username?

Sans-serif bold or monospace. Both are in the Mathematical Alphanumerics block, both keep normal letter shapes, and both render on every current phone. Framed styles and filled squares are better for display names and headers than for the handle itself.

Does fullwidth text count as more characters?

No. A fullwidth A is a single character, U+FF21, the same count as a normal A. It just occupies the width of two. The Vaporwave style in the list adds a space between letters, and those spaces do count.

Why does the same style look different on my friend's phone?

Different keyboard fonts. iOS, Samsung and Pixel each ship their own symbol font, so the weight and spacing of the mathematical alphabets vary a little. The characters are identical; only the drawing differs.
