Fields and limits on WhatsApp

WhatsApp: About 139 characters, profile name 25. Group subjects are capped at 25 characters and group descriptions at 2,048. Status captions and messages have generous limits. All of them accept styled unicode. Messages additionally have native formatting (*bold*, _italic_, ~strike~, backtick monospace) which the profile and group fields lack, and which is preferable inside a conversation because it stays searchable. So the fields where unicode styling earns its place are the About, the profile name, the group subject and description, and status captions.

Rendering on WhatsApp's four clients

WhatsApp draws text with the host system's fonts, so styled text looks the same as the rest of the phone. iOS and current Android cover every mathematical alphabet and the enclosed letters. WhatsApp Web and Desktop on Windows use Segoe UI Symbol for the mathematical blocks and cover them fully; on macOS the Apple system fonts do the same. The gaps are small caps on old Android and a few frame symbols (Egyptian hieroglyph wings, Tibetan marks) on Windows. If a contact reports boxes, the frame is the likely cause; the alphabet almost never is.

Frequently asked questions

What are WhatsApp's text limits?

About: 139 characters. Profile name: 25. Group subject: 25. Group description: 2,048. Styled letters count one each; frame symbols add to the count.

Should I use unicode bold or *asterisk* bold in a message?

Asterisk bold, in a message. It is native, searchable and read correctly aloud. Use unicode styles in the About, profile name, group subject and status captions, which have no native formatting.

Does styled text work on WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Web and Desktop use the computer's fonts, and Windows and macOS both cover the mathematical alphabets. Some decorative frame symbols may be missing on Windows.
