WhatsApp Bio Text & About Styler

Design an eye-catching WhatsApp About section and status updates with stylish fonts and emojis.

The fields and their limits

WhatsApp's About field holds 139 characters. It is the line that appears under your name when someone opens your contact card, and it is the field this page is built around.

The profile name is shorter at 25 characters, which is tight enough that decorated styles rarely fit. A frame plus a name of any length overruns it immediately. Messages themselves are effectively unlimited for this purpose, at 65,536 characters, so styling in a message is never a length problem.

Unlike Instagram or X, WhatsApp has no username or handle. You are identified by phone number, which removes the entire category of problems around identifier fields rejecting unicode. There is no field here that will refuse styled characters outright, only fields where they will not fit.

WhatsApp has native formatting, and that changes things

WhatsApp is the only major messaging platform in this tool set with native text formatting. Wrapping text in asterisks makes it bold, underscores make it italic, tildes make it strikethrough, and triple backticks make it monospace. The app renders the formatting and hides the markers.

This matters because it is genuinely better than unicode styling wherever it works. Native bold is real bold in the recipient's font, at the right weight, fully searchable, and read correctly by screen readers. Unicode mathematical bold is a substitution of different characters that only looks bold.

That is why this page carries four extra copy formats no other page here offers. They wrap your raw text rather than the styled glyphs, because WhatsApp only formats plain characters, wrapping mathematical bold in asterisks leaves the asterisks visible and the text unstyled.

Where the native formatting does and does not apply

The formatting markers work in messages, in captions on media, and in group descriptions. They are a messaging feature.

They do not render in the About field or the profile name, which display as plain text, so typing `*bold*` there shows the asterisks rather than bold text. This is the single most common confusion about WhatsApp formatting and it is worth testing rather than assuming, since behaviour has shifted between app versions.

The practical split is therefore clean: for messages, use the native formatting from the copy dropdown on this page, because it is better in every respect. For the About field and profile name, use unicode styling, because native formatting is unavailable there and unicode is the only way to get visual variation.

What renders reliably

WhatsApp's rendering is among the better ones in this space. It runs on the system font stack of the device, so the mathematical alphanumeric blocks (bold, italic, script, fraktur, double-struck, monospace) display correctly on current iOS and Android.

Emoji render at a good size and count as single characters against the 139 limit. Symbols and decorative frames from long-established Unicode blocks are safe.

The usual caveats apply at the edges: very old Android devices with cut-down font sets fall back to boxes, and combining-mark stacking is constrained by the line height so heavy zalgo is clipped rather than expanded. Given WhatsApp's very wide device distribution, particularly on older hardware in many markets, conservative styles are a better bet here than on platforms with a newer average device.

Writing a good About line

139 characters is short, and the About field is read in a specific context: someone has opened your contact card, usually because they are deciding whether to message you or checking they have the right person.

That argues for clarity over decoration. A line that says what you do, or when you are reachable, does more work than a decorated fragment. If you want styling, style one word rather than the whole line. A single emphasised term reads as deliberate, while a fully decorated line reads as noise and is harder for anyone using a screen reader.

The default About options WhatsApp ships with (Available, Busy, At school) exist because most people want a status rather than a statement. If you replace them, replace them with something that carries more information, not less.

Business accounts differ

WhatsApp Business has additional profile fields (a description, address, email, website and business hours) with their own limits, and the description is considerably longer than the personal About field.

Styled unicode in a business description carries the same accessibility and searchability costs as anywhere else, and the stakes are higher because the audience is customers rather than contacts. A business name in mathematical bold does not match a customer's plain-text search and may look like an error rather than a design choice.

The reasonable approach for a business profile is plain text throughout, with native message formatting used in conversations where it genuinely aids readability, a bold order number, a monospace reference code.

The style set on this page

This page opens on a clean, legible set (bold, small capitals, monospace and typewriter forms) rather than the full library, because the About field is short and read quickly.

Decorated and framed styles are still available through the show-all control, and the character badge updates against whichever field you select, so you can see immediately whether a framed style fits inside 139 characters or overruns the 25-character profile name.

If the text is destined for a message rather than a profile field, the better answer is usually the native formatting options in the copy dropdown, which give you real bold and italic instead of a lookalike.

Status is not the same field as About

The two get conflated constantly and they behave differently. About is the permanent line on your contact card, 139 characters, visible to anyone who can see your profile. Status is the ephemeral feature, photo, video or text posts that expire after 24 hours and appear in a separate tab.

A text status is composed on a coloured background with a choice of font, and it holds considerably more than 139 characters. It is closer to a Story than a bio, and because it disappears, it carries far less weight: a decorated status that is hard to read costs you a day rather than sitting on your profile indefinitely.

Styled unicode works in both, and the trade-off differs. In About, favour legibility. It is read once, in a moment of decision, by someone checking they have the right contact. In Status, decoration is lower risk and the built-in background and font options may already give you the visual effect you were reaching for, without the accessibility cost that unicode substitution carries.

Frequently asked questions

How long can a WhatsApp About be?

139 characters. The profile name is much shorter at 25, which is tight enough that most framed styles will not fit.

How do I make text bold in WhatsApp?

Wrap it in asterisks: `*bold*`. Underscores give italic, tildes strikethrough, triple backticks monospace. This page has copy formats for all four, and they wrap your raw text because native formatting only works on plain characters.

Why do the asterisks show instead of bold text?

Because the markers render in messages, captions and group descriptions but not in the About field or profile name, which display as plain text. Use unicode styling for profile fields.

Is native formatting better than unicode fonts?

Where it works, yes. It produces real bold in the recipient's own font, stays searchable, and is read correctly by screen readers. Unicode styling only looks bold and carries real accessibility costs.

Will styled text work on old Android phones?

Core styles like bold and script generally will. Rarer decorative blocks fall back to boxes on devices with cut-down font sets, which is worth weighing given WhatsApp's wide distribution on older hardware.

Does WhatsApp have usernames?

No. You are identified by phone number, so there is no handle field to reject styled characters, unlike Instagram or X, where the username accepts nothing but plain letters, numbers and a couple of punctuation marks.

Do emoji count against the 139 characters?

Yes, as single characters. Frames and decorative styles are the bigger cost, since they add fixed characters to every line before you have written anything.

Should I style a WhatsApp Business profile?

Generally not. A business name in styled unicode will not match a customer's plain-text search and can read as a fault rather than a choice. Keep it plain and use message formatting where it aids readability.

What is the difference between About and Status?

About is the permanent 139-character line on your contact card. Status is the ephemeral 24-hour feature with its own backgrounds and fonts, holding far more text. Styling matters less in Status because it expires.
